(West Columbia) - A police officer was forced to shoot a dog today after he was attacked.
Officers say a pit bull tied to a house broke free and chased a woman down the street.
The woman called police, and the dog attacked an officer when law enforcement arrived at the house. The officer was forced to shoot the dog.
Officials say the incident could have been avoided.
"If you're going to have a dog tethered, you have to make sure that tether's proper for a dog,” said Jan Otterbacher of West Columbia Animal Control.
"The tether needs to be appropriate for a size and weight of a dog. If you've got a larger dog such as the dog we had today, the chain needs to be where it is proper for that dog."
