Spartanburg County (WSPA-TV) - A Spartanburg County couple is in protective custody after police say they were found living in a filthy home filled with animals.
The man and woman were discovered inside their house in the town of Roebuck.
Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement told WSPA-TV that for the past two years, the couple had been living in a house that had piles of feces and garbage. "Every room was totally cluttered with animal feces, urine, rubbish...just a collection of food that had been scattered for the animals to eat off the floor, off of paper plates," says Don Arnold, who works for the agency.
Authorities began investigating after neighbors noticed a sick horse on the property. Eight dogs and three cats were taken to the Humane Society in poor conditions.
The couple was apparently not close to their relatives, which allowed conditions to deteriorate at their home without anyone noticing.
