(WLTX) - A consumer watchdog group says some of the top lipstick products on the market contain lead.
The lead tests were released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, and were performed by independent laboratories.
The test included brands such as L'Oreal, Cover Girl, and Christian Dior.
The preparers of the study say they found that more than half of 33 brand-name lipsticks tested (61 percent) contained detectable levels of lead. The group says that the lipstick didn't list lead as an ingredient.
The group goes on to say that one-third of the tested lipsticks exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 0.1 ppm limit for lead in candy – a standard established to protect children from directly ingesting lead. Lipstick is often ingest into the body.
The group is concerned because they say the Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate the amount of lead in lipstick.
The group says 39 percent of lipstick had no detectable level of lead, including Revlon.
Here are the top brand testing positive for lead, according to the study:
-L’Oreal Colour Riche “True Red” – 0.65 ppm
-L’Oreal Colour Riche “Classic Wine” – 0.58 ppm
-Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red” – 0.56 ppm
-Dior Addict “Positive Red” – 0.21 ppm
Lead can cause neurological problems, and has been show to cause problems during pregancies.
