Newberry (WLTX)- A taxi cab that crashed into a gas station convenience store was captured on video. It happened yesterday at the Roberts Express-Mart Citgo on Wilson Road.
The driver 55 year old Miranda Wheeler reported a mechanical failure. But D&D Taxi Company owner Annette Darby disagrees. "It's not mechanical problems, it's Miranda Wheeler. "Whatever went through her mind, God knows," says Darby.
She says a mechanic inspected the car after the crash. News 19 obtained a copy of the report on the vehicle. It stated that mechanics were unable to find any problems with the car, and that it was in good shape. "She told me the car went wild. I said, how did it go wild Miranda?"
Michael Burnside witnessed the crash. He says after Wheeler backed into a pole near the gas pumps, she accelerated straight into the building. He says Wheeler then backed up a second time and struck three vehicles at a nearby car lot.
Darby says she doesn't think Wheeler had any intentions of remaining at the crash scene. "I really believe she was trying to get away when she went through the store because she put it in reverse and came out," says Darby.
She says she never would have imagined that when she hired Wheeler last July, that it would end like it did. "She is terminated, she will not drive for me again, she will not," says Darby.
Meanwhile South Carolina Highway Patrol investigators have not determined whether or not the accident was Wheeler's fault.
The five victims, including Wheeler, were taken to Newberry Community Hospital with injuries.
