Spartanburg (AP) -- A Lyman couple has been arrested after authorities say they were responsible for a hazardous chemical spill along 13 miles of road in Spartanburg County.
Department of Health and Environmental Control investigators Wednesday charged 41-year-old Marvin Brown and 35-year-old Barbara Brown with violating pollution and hazardous waste laws.
The chemical left a brown stripe down the center of several roads.
DHEC spokesman Thom Berry says the waste is a byproduct of bonding metals together by running an electric charge through liquid.
Berry says residents should not touch the spill. It is safe to drive over.
Berry says authorities are trying to figure out how to clean the spill and said it could take days.
The couple remained in the Spartanburg County jail Wednesday and it wasn't clear if they had an attorney.
