COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina defense contractor FN Manufacturing has been steadily growing since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And now the company's ready to grow larger. The State newspaper of Columbia reported that the Columbia-based company has nearly doubled its work force in the region since the beginning of the Middle East conflicts. About 750 people now work at FN. But next year the company will compete for a contract to build the Army's M4 carbine. FN chief executive officer Jean-Louis Vanderstraeten said that deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars could increase FN's Columbia work force by up to 100. FN already produces the M-16 rifle, a weapon carried by almost every G.I. The company has also been picked to develop a new weapon for U.S. Special Operations Forces.
