Columbia, SC-The Animal Mission, the non-profit support group for The Columbia Animal Shelter, is extending its spay/neuter coupon campaign through August 31, 2009.
City of Columbia and Richland County residents can pick up coupons from the City of Columbia Animal Shelter at 127 Humane Lane in Columbia.
The coupons can be used at participating veterinarian offices and at the HSPCA through August 31,2009 for a discounted spay/neuter operation for a cat or dog.
There are 500 coupons available on a first-come, first-served basis, limited to two coupons per person.
"Our goal is to reduce the number of pets being brought to the shelter," said Jim "Soni" Sonefeld, the Animal Mission's Board President. "Spaying and neutering stops unwanted litters, and is the first stepin reaching that goal."
The Animal Mission has offered spay/neuter coupons each spring since 2006. Over the last three years, the non-profit group has invested almost $570,000 in the spay/neuter program which funded more than 12,600 spay/neuter surgeries in the Midlands.
"We're glad that we're able to offer more coupons, especially in these tough economic times," Sonefeld said.
The Animal Mission's on-going efforts are made possible by money raised at Party Animals, the organization's annual fundraiser held each March. In addition to funding the spay/neuter program, proceeds also go directly to the care of the shelter animals and the abandoned farm animals living inthe shelter's barnyard.
The Animal Mission also encourages cat and dog adoptions from the Columbia Animal Shelter. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, The Animal Mission is run solely by volunteers with no paid staff or office space.
