Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Between classes at USC, one man is training for an international competition that you won't find in Columbia.
"On a given week I'll probably work out four or five days a week for about six to seven hours a day total," 22-year-old Kurt Wiegner says.
He is hardcore. He has a background in gymnastics, jazz, hip-hop and ballet.
"You're doing the same movements over and over but you're training your body to remember the movements, like muscle memory," Kurt says. "It's the rush of being on stage that makes you work harder and try to perfect your technique. You have to use almost every muscle in your body."
When Kurt saw the Britney Spears "Gimme More" video, he decided to take his skills to new heights.
"It got me to thinking, wow, is that really all pole dancers do is just walk around a pole? So I said there has to be more to this," Kurt explains.
A year and a half later, Kurt's flying to Tokyo for an international pole dancing fitness competition.
"My style is definitely more athletic, more artistic," Kurt says. "You're moving so fast but you're also holding your own body weight, which is a lot to be holding in just your arms."
He's also holding on to his sense of self and a style of dance he loves.
"That's what it's all about for me, having fun, being comfortable in your own self, being comfortable with your body and just having fun with dancing," Kurt says.
You can learn to dance like Kurt, or at least take a class with him. "PoleooZa" is offering discounted classes to our viewers who sign up in the next day and mention this story.
