Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The former vice president of enrollment at Allen University has filed a lawsuit against the school and its President Charles Young, claiming she was sexually harassed.
The plaintiff, Dr. Sonya Melton, alleges that shortly after being hired by Allen University in 2006, President Young started to coerce and force her into an inappropriate relationship with him. Document: Read the Full Lawsuit by Melton Against Allen University and Dr. Young
In a 17 page complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Melton states that Young tried to control her by ordering her to not have any friendships or relationships with any faculty or staff, and to only deal with him. In late 2007, Melton claims Young began to coerce and force himself upon her sexually. She alleges that Young even choked her.
Melton says in late 2008 she was demoted to associate vice president of enrollment management and her office was relocated to the basement area of the university.
The university and the African Methodist Episcopal Church are also listed in the lawsuit. It claims both were aware of the situation but did not take any action.
Melton's attorney, Benjamin Mabry, had no comment on the lawsuit. News19 has attempted to contact attorney Stephen Morrision, who represents President Young and Allen University.
