COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -- South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia says he took coach Steve Spurrier's challenge to heart.
Garcia was bothered this spring when Spurrier questioned his commitment. The two spoke in May and Garcia took a harder look at Spurrier's words. Garcia realized his coach had a point and got to work.
Garcia says he's dropped about 10 pounds during the offseason through conditioning and diet. He also worked on his ball release since South Carolina was tied for last in the Southeastern Conference in sacks allowed.
Garcia threw for 220 yards a game last fall, second only to Arkansas' Ryan Mallett among SEC quarterbacks. Spurrier, however, thinks Garcia needs to make crisper decisions.
