Bennettsville, SC (WLTX, WBTW) -- WBTW-TV is reporting that eight inmates were hospitalized Tuesday after a fight erupted at Evans Correctional Institution near Bennettsville, SC, Department of Corrections spokesman Josh Gelinas said.

Gelinas say the fight started at about 4:30 p.m. in the dormitories, when some inmates began a scuffle among themselves. According to Gelinas, several inmates suffered stab wounds, and eight were treated for various stab wounds.

No one was killed in the fight. Seven inmates were released from the hospital and have been returned to the prison. One inmate is still in stable condition at the hospital.

The facility was secured by about 8:30 p.m., but the incident remains under investigation, Gelinas said. Half of the dormitory where the fight began is still on lockdown, according to Gelinas.

Evans is a medium-security Level 2 facility on the state corrections scale, with Level 3 being the highest. Housing consists primarily of double bunk cells with a few double bunk cubicles.
