Lee County, SC (WLTX) - Lee County deputies say a man involved in an earlier traffic accident Wednesday morning then drove onto Interstate 20, dying in a wrong-way accident.
The incident took place in the 4 o'clock hour in Lee County.
Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon says his officers got a call that a man was involved in traffic accident on the Sumter Highway in Bishopville. Responding officers said the man appeared to have a head injury.
When officers attempted to help him, however, he drove away, and headed toward I-20. Simon says he entered the interstate going eastbound in the westbound lanes.
The driver then collided with an oncoming vehicle, causing his car to catch fire.
The Lee County coroner's office says the body was burned too badly for identification, and would have to be sent to the State Law Enforcement Center's office in Newberry County to find out who he was.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the further investigation into the incident.
Traffic had to be diverted onto Highway 15 while crews worked on the scene.
