Eastover, SC (WLTX) - A man has been arrested in the death of an 83-year-old grandmother in Eastover.
Sammy Lynch, 34, was taken into custody and charged with murder in the death of Evelyn Harbin.
Harbin's family found her dead on Friday at her home on Pond Drive in Eastover. Authorities say she had signs of trauma to her upper body, and her 2000 burgundy Chevy Blazer had been stolen.
According to investigators, Lynch lived across the street from Harbin.
Investigators have concluded that Lynch unlawfully entered her home either late Wednesday, September 1 or early Thursday, September 2. While he was there, investigators say he killed the woman after the two got into a physical fight.
Deputies say Lynch then left the home in Harbin's Blazer after stealing electronics and personal belongings. They also believe he came back and stole more items at a later time.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says Lynch was a crack addict and went in her home looking for money.
Investigators say they were able to make a break in the case when they received information about Lynch's drug problems. They began to take a closer look at him, and on Wednesday, they found the victim's car at an abandoned building that's located behind the suspect's house.
Officers say they also found other evidence at that location linking Lynch to the crime.
Investigators also believe he used Harbin's cell phone to call an online dating service after he killed her.
Lynch was arrested at his home Thursday morning.
Loved ones say Harbin was a retired cake decorator from Bi-Lo who leaves behind two grandchildren and a host of loved ones.
