Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Facial-recognition software isn't new technology, but it is relatively new for smartphone users to have this feature available to them.

"There is a lot of great things about the internet but there are also a lot of bad things about the internet," said David Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of Columbia's FBI Division.

Thomas says many people would be surprised how easily identifiable they are on the internet.

"If I pick a photograph of myself that is out on the internet, the app will automatically go searching for this photograph and you can see it even identifies me by name."

Phone calls are just a small part of what people use them for. and with facial recognition apps it's easier than ever to connect the dots when trying to get information.

"You have to be aware of it the same way you are with locking your car or your house. What information do you have out there and do you ever go search for yourself just to see what is available," said Thomas.

Thomas says internet and smartphone security should be on everyone's mind as it's evovling everyday.

"It is very hard for the FBI or anyone else to keep up with. The internet was not designed for secured communication, it wasn't designed to do banking, it wasn't designed for everything we are using it for," said Thomas.

The best way to remain anonymous is to take separate pictures for all of your online accounts.
