Stephen Colbert might hide behind a brash, super-confident character on Comedy Central's Colbert Report
, but he gets downright giddy talking about his favorite iPhone app - Marine Traffic
That's right, Colbert loves the world's most popular online service for vessel tracking. Bet you didn't see that one coming.
"I'm from Charleston, S.C., and I grew up on the water there," says Colbert. "I love shipping. I'm a train spotter but with boats. And this app is fantastic."
He then pauses over the ramifications of plugging the product, which clearly is marketed to a niche audience.
"This thing is about to get The Colbert Bump," Colbert says.
It will take a lot to boost the popularity of an app, which gives real-time positions of large watercraft. But if anyone can do it, it's Colbert, who is also voicing a role in the upcoming Mr. Peabody & Sherman movie.
Click on the app and select your location on the world map and it will identify what ship you are looking at. "So I am here in New York, and it tells me the name of every ship in New York Harbor. Even sailboats of a certain size and big ocean ships."
"Right now the Joyce D. Brown tug is making 5 knots toward New Jersey," says Colbert, giving a thrilling play-by-play. "It tells the history of the boat. It tells the last port of call."
His other favorite app might not truly exist. But at least it's more in keeping with his screen persona.
"I have a little app that says, 'You were wonderful Mr. Colbert.' It's like the Easy Button from Staples," Colbert insists. "I carry it with me everywhere I go."
