Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Residents of Richland and Lexington counties are welcome to visit Riverbanks Zoo and Garden for free on Fridays this month to February, zoo officials said.

The promotion begins Friday, Jan. 6, and visitors are required to show proof of residency with a valid ID or property tax statement. Residents are welcome to visit as many of the eight Fridays they choose, zoo officials said.

Other visitors will be charged full admission, according to a news release. Officials said since the zoo is a "special purpose district," it relies on funding from property taxes collected by the two counties to pay for its operating budget.

"Riverbanks is grateful for the continued support provided by the residents of Richland and Lexington counties," said Executive Director Satch Krantz, in the news release. "The Free Fridays program is one way we can show our appreciation."

According to zoo officials, many of the animals are more active during the cooler winter months, making January and February a nice time to visit.

Indoor exhibits, like the Aquarium-Reptile Complex, Birdhouse, Gorilla Base Camp and Koala Knockabout are also good options for visitors if the weather is chilly. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day during the winter.
