Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- In the Midlands, we're used to the homecoming of soldiers from area bases, however a sailor has a lot to be thankful for this holiday.
"Truly it is going to be the best Thanksgiving I think I've ever had," said Cindy Niske.
Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for what you have.
"I'm very appreciative of the fact that I'm able to get this time, so I feel very lucky and fortunate to be able to be here," said OSSN Kelly Piper.
For Kelly's mom, Cindy, she's thankful for her daughter to even be in the Midlands.
"I booked the flight earlier, but she really didn't get approved until last week," Niske said. "We were really kind of gambling on it. But, you know, from a mom's perspective it was worth the gamble."
Kelly has been gone since April 2011 and has been around the world. From San Diego, Calif. to Brisbon, Australia.
"You do find yourself homesick every once in awhile," Piper said.
But for five days Kelly gets to enjoy the comfort of being home with her family. And even her four-legged friends.
"I've missed my dog so much," Piper said.
And while most are focused on what they'll be piling on their plate, Cindy is just happy to have a space at the table for Kelly.
"Never mind Thanksgiving and turkey and casseroles and all of that," Niske said. "I've just been so excited about Kelly being home."
Kelly heads back to San Diego on Sunday.
