Sumter, SC (WLTX) - On Saturday, many people in Sumter  received free school supplies thanks to their community.

Shekinah Wilson is a mother of two and says this event will help her family.

"It makes me real happy to see a good thing going on in the community," says Wilson. "We are in line to get a free haircut and that will also save us a couple dollars."

Sumter Mall's Back to School Jamboree, provided students with supplies like  backpack, notebooks, pencils and even free haircuts.

"Its a blessing to have a lot of people to get together with this back to school bash to honor our kids and doing something special for them," says Kiana Myers.

Many participants like Myers, said the event was a great example of people working together in the Sumter community.

Ronald Robinson with Sumter Rural Development, provided  backpack and says its one of the most important items a child needs in school.

"Some parents may have 3 or 4 children," said Robinson. "So a little system as small as giving them a backpack and giving it to the students is a big help for  the parent."
