Columbia, SC (WLTX) - USC wide receiver Damiere Byrd will finally get a chance to begin his college career.
Friday, the NCAA ruled Byrd, a freshman from New Jersey, eligible for the Auburn game.
Byrd was ruled ineligible for the first four games of the season because of his involvement with the Student Athlete Mentoring (SAM) Foundation, a charity which helps student athletes.
In addition to the lost games, Byrd had to pay back the money he'd received from SAM.
"I can't begin to tell you how happy I am for Damiere," said Athletics Director Eric Hyman in a written statement. "Our folks in the department worked tirelessly to address the issues they encountered with Damiere's situation. With the NCAA's cooperation, we were able to resolve the issues in a timely manner that will allow him to play on Saturday."
The No. 10/9 Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0 SEC) will host the Auburn Tigers (3-1, 1-0 SEC) on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS/WLTX.
