Shaq Roland moments after he signed with South Carolina on February 1, 2012.
Columbia, SC (WLTX) - USC's 2012 football recruiting class is rounding into form, led by the signing of the number one player in the state, Shaq Roland.
On Wednesday, National Signing Day, the Lexington High wide receiver made official what has been known for months--he's going to be a Gamecock.
"It's a great day for me," he said."
Roland signed his letter of intent at his high school in front of friends, family, and his classmates. South Carolina's "Mr. Football" was listed as the top prospect in South Carolina by recruiting website Rivals.com, and has been verbally committed for some time.
"I'm just going to go in and work hard, do what I need to do, and let my play decide if I can play early or not."
The Gamecocks this year are filling out their ranks with a lot of out of state talent, particularly from Georgia and North Carolina. Of the 25 recruits who signed or were already on campus, 20 were from outside the Palmetto State. Highlighting that group were Chaz Elder of College Park, Georgia, a four-star defensive back and offensive lineman Joe Harris of Lithonia, Georgia.
Mike Davis from Stone Mountain, Georgia was originally going to Florida, but back off that and gave USC the verbal nod. The brother of former Clemson running back James Davis added to the Georgia pipeline by signing with the garnet.
