Orangeburg County, SC (WLTX) - The mayor of the Orangeburg County town of Norway has requested a jury trial in a traffic case involving him and a state trooper.
Jim Preacher was not present at his scheduled traffic court appearance Tuesday. He instead notified the judge that he would be asking for a jury to hear his case.
A document sent by The Davis Law Firm in Orangeburg requested the jury trial address the charges of "speeding and any other charges pending on 1/18/12."
Mayor Preacher declined our request for an interview. Lawyers with the Davis Law Firm did not return our calls.
Back on January 18, troopers pulled over Preacher on suspicion of speeding, and he was ticketed.
After the trooper let him go, however, Preacher made a u-turn and pulled over the same trooper. A dash cam video captured the exchange.
Preacher told the trooper he was a constable and that the trooper was interfering with his duties.
An email exchange between the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and SLED confirms Preacher has not applied or been approved for constable status since February 2011.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the traffic stop.
