Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A Columbia school has been awarded with one of the highest education honors in the country.

South Kilbourne Elementary has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education.

To be considered for the national award, a school needs to have high test scores and must have a disadvantaged student rate of at least 40 percent. South Kilbourne's disadvantaged rate is double that.

The principal, Sarah Smith, says her school proves that with a hard working staff and student body educators can beat the odds.

"We are a title one school," said Smith. "We are 98% free and reduced lunch and many times the public perceives poverty as those children who aren't able to obtain knowledge. But we are so successful in what we have done and we have shared with the nation that regardless of poverty students can learn."

School officials will soon travel to Washington D.C. to collect the official award.
