Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Gamecock fans spent Friday afternoon watching the Gamecock baseball team scrimmage.  Just one week before Opening day.

The crack of the bat is an early sign that the start to a Gamecock Baseball season is near.

"We love our baseball here," said Taylor Farr.

"It's a tradition; I have been coming to the game for about seven or eight years," said Barney Rader.

Die-hard Gamecock fans came out to see the baseball team in action, a week before opening day.

"Been through it all.  The sad day, 0-21 I was there," said Farr.

The team is coming off three straight college world series championship appearances and despite new faces, the fans are confident.

"We have a lot of good players back and they will do well. We have to get to Omaha first and then we will see what we will do," said Rader.

"We got the chicken," said Farr.

For Farr, tradition has a whole new meaning.

Farr brought pig and chicken oven mitts to wear for the USC basketball game against Arkansas... The team won and now Farr sees it as a good luck charm for the team.

"We yelled at Coach Frank Martin and he looked at it and put his hand on his head and we knew it had to continue."

On the diamond, he believes USC will make it back to Omaha for the fourth straight year.

"I think Coach Holbrook is an excellent choice to replace Coach Tanner and we have top talent out there, the sky is the limit for us."

As fans watch the team that they say is destined for greatness, Farr says the team's success lies in his hands; bringing a chicken and a pig to the games.
