SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The state Transportation Department plans to remove trees in a deadly section of Interstate 25 from Summerville to I-95 to reduce the number of crashes that cause fatalities and severe injuries.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported DOT also plans to install cable guardrails in the center of the median after the trees are removed from the nearly 30 miles of highway.

Officials announced the $5 million project in Berkeley and Dorchester counties Friday.

In 2010, an analysis conducted by The Post and Courier showed more people had died in wrecks along the stretch of interstate around Ridgeville than any other part of the highway. Records showed that of the nine fatal wrecks in 2009 between Summerville and I-95, seven involved impacts with trees or roll-overs into ditches.
