Guard Shoots At Inmate In ER at Palmetto Health

COLUMBIA, SC  (WLTX) - A gunshot rang out in the emergency room at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital Wednesday when a SC Department of Corrections inmate, there to receive treatment, stole a gun from one of the correctional officers escorting him. 

A second correctional officer fired a shot toward the inmate/patient which helped subdue the patient and allowed the team to regain custody.

No one was injured during the incident.

 The inmate/patient has been transported back to Kirkland Correctional Institute. 

The incident now is being investigated by SLED and the hospital is cooperating fully. 

The hospital chaplain provided counseling to those affected.
