CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A former research scientist at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg says he has been fired for questioning the use of grant money.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/1050FyK ) that Kenneth Lewis said he was fired after asking questions about grant money being diverted to a little-known foundation run by his supervisor.

School officials say Lewis' allegations are claims by a disgruntled ex-employee. The school says it's done nothing wrong.

Lewis said the school fired him March 18 after he questioned the handling of nearly $200,000 in grant money for nuclear forensic research. The school would not discuss Lewis' firing.

He says the money was to be diverted to a foundation run by John Rosenthal, vice president for research and economic development.

Rosenthal says he's done nothing wrong.
