COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Kershaw County chemical company has reached a $500,000 settlement with the federal government over pollution claims.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said that Weylchem US, Inc. finished years of negotiations Tuesday with the federal government over claims the company violated air, water and solid waste pollution laws.

Authorities sat Weylchem agreed to stop dumping chemical waste into the Wateree River and will stop about 30 trips a day shipping wastewater from its facility in Elgin to Lugoff.

Oficials say Weylchem already has improved its air pollution equipment and will check waste tanks for leaks.

Weylchem will pay a $500,000 fine, with $175,000 going to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
