(WLTX) --- Kyle Martin's pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth provided some late fireworks but it wasn't enough as Vanderbilt escaped with a 3-2 win in game one of the best-of-three series at Carolina Stadium.

Carolina trailed 3-0 before getting on the board in the eighth courtesy of a Joey Pankake RBI double which scored Graham Saiko.

Martin's home run came off Vandy closer Brian Miller who earned his 13th save.

Nolan Belcher (6-5) took the loss after allowing the three runs in six innings of work. He did strike out six while allowing six hits.

Game two is set for 12 noon Saturday.
