Batesburg-Leesville, SC (WLTX)- Camp Kemo is a one week summer camp for children with cancer and their siblings.
The Palmetto Health Children's Hospital hosts the annual event in Batesburg Leesville at Camp Kinard. Over 100 kids fill the cabins for the overnight camp free of charge.
"This is an incredible summer camp, the best one around," said Cassandra Shea, Camp Kemo's Director.
This is the first year Shea has directed the camp, Jeanne Schmidt ran Camp Kemo for several years before passing away last year. To honor the former director the theme of this year's camp is 'County Fair', one of Jeanne's favorites.
"We are all family out here, everyone knows the struggles and hardships you go through," said Kelsey Sawyer, who has been a counselor for 5 years.
Sawyer lost her brother to cancer and has become passionate about working at Camp Kemo every year.
"It is a week to forget about all of your troubles and have the best week ever," said Sawyer.
Camp Kemo is funded completely by community donations.
