CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Doctors and researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina say they want to encourage Congress to restore money for cancer research.

A news conference is scheduled for Friday at the Charleston medical school with representatives of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and the university's Hollings Cancer Center.

During the current federal fiscal year, cancer researchers in South Carolina have received $142 million in federal funding.

Advocates want the money restored for research and screening programs. They say cancer kills about 1,500 Americans every day.
