Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has set a new attendance record.
Leaders for the attraction say 1,039,372 guests came through the park during the 2012-2013 fiscal year, which ended in June. That beat the previous year's mark by over 10,000 guests.
Riverbanks Zoo President and CEO Satch Krantz says Riverbanks attracts more visitors than many zoos in larger cities such as Atlanta, Dallas and Miami.
"Nearly 40% of our guests travel 50 miles or more from outside of Columbia to enjoy a fun and affordable family outing, making Riverbanks a major contributor to the Midlands economy," Krantz said in a statement.
The zoo plans a $32 million expansion over the next few years, and is also constructing a zip line canopy tour that's expected to open later this summer.
