Newberry, SC (WLTX)- Thousands of orchids are sold worldwide from a family-run business right in our own backyard.
Carter and Holmes Orchids in Newberry is one of the largest orchid farms in the world. They sell hundreds of thousands of dollars in flowers each year and employs 25 people.
Mac Holmes' father started Carter and Holmes Orchids in 1947. Holmes said there business took off in a popular magazine.
"One day my father placed a classified add in southern living magazine and sold more orchids than he ever dreamed and we became a mail order business," Holmes said.
Why is their business so unique? The plants are cloned and grown in a laboratory where there are fifty thousand flasks.
They said they are the only laboratory orchid propagation facility in South Carolina that mass produces and sells plants.
