GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - A 79-year-old West Virginia man died when his plane crashed into the woods less than a mile from the Georgetown County Airport.
Authorities say John Prince Harris of Charleston, W.Va., was on his way to visit family in Georgetown. He was the pilot and the only person onboard the two-seat decommissioned military aircraft when it crashed at 1:20 p.m. Monday.
According to flight records, Harris' Folland Gnat T1 had left Charleston, W.Va., less than an hour earlier.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Georgetown County Coroner Kenneth Johnson says Harris has a home in the area, so he frequently made trips to Georgetown.
County officials had to create a path into the dense woods so emergency crews could access the wreck.
