Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Richland County Coroner has ordered an inquest into the May 25th shooting death of 21-year-old Ajani Mitchell. Mitchell was shot after an incident involving Columbia Police.
Watts says he decided to order the inquest after reviewing a report from SLED on the incident. He also says the coroner's office has received numerous calls concerning the case.
The lawyer for Mitchell's family tells News19 that he was shot 11 times. They also claim they have heard conflict stories about the location of a weapon that police claim Mitchell was holding when they fired.
Columbia police say on May 25th, they were called to Conveyor Street and seized a pistol from Mitchell. They say later that evening, they were called again about Mitchell having a different gun. Interim Chief Ruben Santiago says officers feared for their lives, and shot Mitchell.

The inquest is scheduled to take place in September.A six member jury will hear testimony and issue a ruling in the manner of death.
