Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia is getting national attention for a proposal city council is considering to get homeless people off the street and in a shelter instead.
The topic has become heated at times with business owners, city leaders and advocates for the homeless at odds over what is the best way to handle this delicate situation. Previous Coverage: City Defends Divisive Homeless Plan
Critics say the proposal would isolate the homeless population from the downtown area. They also question its Constitutionality, saying it profiles a class of people. But supporters say the city is thinking outside the box to address an issue that's been largely ignored for the last 20 years. They say it works to balance the rights of the homeless population, businesses and homeowners downtown.
