Sumter, South Carolina (WLTX)- A Sumter middle school football player lived through a traumatic experience, one he said he'll never forget.

Over the weekend 35 Alice Drive Middle School students were on their way back from a football scrimmage when the bus veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

David Windham, a father of one of the football players was following the bus after he left the Hillcrest High School football field.

What Windham witnessed next is unimaginable for any parent.

"All I could think about was hoping my son was ok," Windham said.

His son, 14-year-old Ricky Windham.

"I just thank god I'm ok," Windham said.

Sumter School District Public Information Officer, Shelly Galloway said 35 Alice Drive Middle School 8th graders were traveling from the scrimmage, 26 students and one driver were transported to the hospital.

All of the injuries were non-life threatening, and all but one student has been released.

The bus was driven by the coach, Billy Ray Geddings.
Geddings was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Alice Middle School football team will still continue playing this season.

There next game will be at Hillcrest on Wednesday at 5p.m.
