Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- The Sumter County Sheriff reports a passerby discovered a pipe bomb along the side of Middleton Road in Sumter on Sunday.
At approximately 5PM Sunday, September 1st, a Sumter Deputy reports that while he was on patrol he was dispatched to Middleton Road in Sumter. The witness at that location had called dispatch to notify them he had found what could possibly be a pipe bomb.
The Deputy met with the witness, who pointed out an 8 to 12 inch long silver pipe, with tape on both ends.
Rather than risking harm, the Deputy wisely made contact with his superior, who then enacted a command call requesting attendance by several emergency services, along with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's bomb squad.
SLED's bomb squad reportedly disposed of the device, and the Sumter County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the incident.
