Miss SC Brooke Mosteller, Pageant Official Apologize for 'Mobile Home' Remark

Brooke Mosteller is crowned Miss South Carolina 2013.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Miss South Carolina and the Miss South Carolina pageant are apologizing for a remark about mobile homes made during last Sunday's Miss America pageant.

Miss SC Brooke Mosteller and Ashley Byrd, executive director of the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization, issued the statement Wednesday.

Here's what led to the apology. During the introductory segment of the pageant, Mosteller said, "from the state where 20 percent of our homes are mobile 'cause that's how we roll, I'm Brooke Mosteller, Miss South Carolina."

The comment drew sharp criticism from South Carolinians on social media, who said the comment was "distasteful" and misrepresented the state. Previous Coverage: Miss South Carolina's Introduction Upsets Home State

"The introductory statement for Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller was decided collectively with the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization in an attempt to be creative and humorous," the statement reads. "We regret this was perceived as insensitive and we apologize to our fellow South Carolinians who may have been offended. South Carolina is an amazing place with its loving people, resplendent history, positive business climate, vibrant culture, and beautiful natural resources."

Mosteller is a native of the Charleston area, and attends the University of South Carolina School of Law.

The introductory statement for Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller was decided collectively with the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization in an attempt to be creative and humorous. We regret this was perceived as insensitive and we apologize to our fellow South Carolinians who may have been offended. South Carolina is an amazing place with its loving people, resplendent history, positive business climate, vibrant culture, and beautiful natural resources.

Brooke Mosteller, Miss South Carolina is a wonderful representative of the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization, winning over $33,000 in scholarships from the MSCSO and the Miss America Organizations, she also was named Miss Congeniality for both the Miss South Carolina and Miss America Competitions. Her desire is to serve the people of South Carolina with the same measure of congeniality that produced this recognition by her fellow contestants. She looks forward to using the remainder of her reign promoting the State of South Carolina and various charitable causes.
