COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A traveling exhibit scheduled to open in Columbia is part of a remembrance being held in seven southern cities to recount their roles in the civil rights struggle 50 years ago.

The exhibit, "50 Years Forward," is set to open Friday at 1 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The exhibit, open through the end of October, portrays several key events in 1963 and takes note of the courage and sacrifice of those who took risks to force the nation to live up to its democratic ideals.

Other cities included in the remembrance are Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery, Ala., Jackson, Miss., Memphis, Tenn., and Washington.
