Bishopville, SC (WLTX) - A law enforcement raid on a suspected dogfighting operation in Sumter County has led to animal seizures and over a dozen arrests.
State Law Enforcement Division agents, Lee County deputies, and Sumter County deputies made the announcement Friday.
The raid took place just before 8 p.m. Thursday on Spring Hill Road in Rembert. It all started when the SLED received a tip of possible dog fighting.
At first, it wasn't clear what county the incident may have happened, and officers from both Sumter and Lee Counties were notified. Eventually officers discovered an area that looked like a dog fighting ring inside Sumter County.
Officers say 19 dogs--a mix of adult dogs and puppies--were seized. The animals will be evaluated by veterinarians.
Thirteen adults and one juvenile were arrested, and guns and marijuana were found on the property and in vehicles parked at the scene.
Investigators say some people fled the scene when they arrived and that the search is still active.
