Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - An Orangeburg County man has pleaded guilty to unemployment insurance fraud.

Demetrius Porter, 29, entered the plea on one count of making a false statement or misrepresentation with the intent to defraud the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce.

SCDEW officials say from 2009 to 2011, Porter got unemployment benefits by telling the agency that he was unemployed and earning no money. However, SCDEW says he was actually employed at the time and falsified information about his current status.

Porter received five years probation and a sentence that was suspended to time served. He's been ordered to repay SCDEW $17,000 in restitution.
