Irmo, SC (WLTX) - A teacher at Dutch Fork Middle School has received the Milken Educator Award, known as the "Oscars of Teaching."
Mrs. Kristi Grooms has been teaching English at Dutch Fork for 10-years and was surprised on Thursday morning with the award that comes with at $25,000 prize!
More than a thousand students, several educators and the State Superintendent of Education, Mick Zais all gathered in the school's gym for the surprise announcement.
When Grooms received the award she was speechless at first, and then broke down in tears once she realized the magnitude of the award.
The Milken Awards, conceived by Lowell Milkem, were created to attract outstanding people to the teaching profession. Since 1987, the Milken Family Foundation has devoted more that $136 million to the awards, including $64 million in individual awards.
A teacher can not apply or be nominated for the Milken Educator Award. The organization seeks out the recipients.
Grooms plans to pay off her debt, share it with her parents and buy a Russell Wilson Seahawks jersey!
