Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Thousands walked the stage at The Colonial Life Arena Monday afternoon.
The university awarded 1,845 degrees from the Columbia campus. Also, 857 graduates received degrees from other USC campuses around the state.
Martha Smalls, a former University of South Carolina student was the commencement speaker. Smalls serves as executive vice president of public affairs and chief of staff at Nickelodeon Networks Group.
The ceremony started off with USC President Harris Pastides and then followed by Joshua Day who sang the National Anthem.
"It was wonderful," Day said. "It was just an uplifting feeling shaking the presidents hand and our dean's hand knowing that we've accomplished a huge milestone in our lives."
Music Education Major Victoria Leitner also took the stage singing the USC Alma Mater.
"I feel really honored," Leitner said. "My sister is also a alumni and she was able to sing the Alma Mater at her graduation. It was really special to be able to follow in her footsteps."
Some of USC's biggest athletic stars also shared the spotlight. USC quarterback Connor Shaw graduated along with wide receiver and point guard Bruce Ellington.
Shaw is the school's all-time winningest quarterback. Ellington is the team's leading receiver this year.
