SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Jury selection is scheduled to begin next year in the death penalty case against a man accused of killing an 8-year-old Chesnee girl to get back at his wife for leaving him.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported that jury selection is scheduled to begin March 3 in trial of 55-year-old Ricky Lee Blackwell Sr., who's charged with kidnapping and murder in the death of Heather Brook Center in July 2009.
Authorities said Blackwell put the girl in a headlock, then shot her in the head and fired three more shots into her as she fell. The girl was the daughter of Blackwell's estranged wife's boyfriend.
Authorities said Blackwell also shot himself in the stomach.
Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty if Blackwell is convicted.
