Sumter, SC (WLTX) - The federal government has responded to an appeal from Sumter's Tuomey Hospital.

Last year, a federal jury decided Tuomey got illegal kickbacks under Medicare law, and the hospital was ordered to pay back $237 million. But the hospital appealed, saying doing so would force the medical facility to close.

Attorneys for the government have responded, saying they want Tuomey to go ahead and pay $70 million in escrow and security deposits while the appeals process continues.

In court papers filed Wednesday, the government says the 70 million won't affect healthcare services at Tuomey.
