Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police say a man was shot and killed after breaking into an apartment to confront his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.
Officers say the incident took place Sunday night on Randall Avenue Extension.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the man who was killed as 26-year-old Roderick Eugene Harris Jr.
According to police, Harris broke into an apartment at that location where the ex-girlfriend and the new boyfriend were staying.
The woman told police she'd recently ended her relationship with the Harris, and that he'd made threats recently.
When the man came inside, officers say Harris and the new boyfriend got into an argument. Police say Harris charged toward the new boyfriend, who responded by pulling out a gun and shooting the man.
Officers say the new boyfriend left the scene, but returned and is cooperating with police.
Police and prosecutors discussed the case, and say because of the state's Castle Doctrine, the shooter won't face charges. The Castle Doctrine protects people from prosecution if it is determined they are defending their home.
