Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Governor Nikki Haley presented her $6.6 billion dollar budget proposal for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
The major themes- Education, jobs, public safety, mental health and infrastructure.
"We are going to continue to lead South Carolina in a way that shows we are making progress. I think a billion dollar transportation bill last year is great and I think we are going to continue to talk about infrastructure every year," said Governor Haley. "But for those people who want to raise taxes, I am not your girl."
A large portion of the Governor's budget goes toward education in poor and rural areas. More than $160 million dollars will provide reading coaches, tablets and wireless capabilities for the poorest schools across the state.
"We believe this is going to bring a huge difference in the way we educate our children in South Carolina, so that we no longer have educate based on where they are born and raised we educate them based on the fact that they deserve a good education and that is our future workforce," said Haley.
The Governor's plan also emphasizes public safety initiatives-- $3.6 million dollars will provide for 25 new SLED employees.
If the budget plan is adopted 75 percent of taxpayers would save $29 dollars a year by eliminating the six percent tax bracket on state income taxes.
