Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says overall crime in the county has dropped, according to the latest numbers from his department.
Lott released the 2013 statistics Tuesday.
The data shows there were 1765 violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and assault) in the county last year, down from 1992 in 2012. The biggest drop came in the number of robberies, which went from 353 to 260. There were 20 murders in the county compared to 15 the year before, and the number of rapes went down, from 129 to 117.
Property crimes (burglary, car theft, larceny) also saw a decline, from 4570 incidents in 2012 to 3895 in 2013.
Over the last five years, there has been a 12 percent drop in total crime, including a dip in violent crime of 14.3 percent.
