Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Wrestling star Mae Young has passed away at the age of 90.

The WWE announced her passing on its official website.

"There will never be another Mae Young," said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon in a statement. "Her longevity in sports entertainment may never be matched, and I will forever be grateful for all of her contributions to the industry. On behalf of WWE, I extend our sincerest condolences to her family and friends."

Young began her wresting career in 1939, starring in wrestling leagues in both Canada and the United States. In 1999, she joined the WWE, making appearance over the years. In fact, she celebrated her 90th birthday last March on the WWE's flagship television broadcast, "Monday Night Raw."

Young lived much of her later life in Columbia. She was good friends with another longtime female wrestler, Mary Ellison, who went by the stage name "The Fabulous Moolah." Ellison was a Midlands native who also resided in Columbia.
