Forest Acres, SC (WLTX) - Forest Acres police say a suspect is dead following a shootout during a home invasion Monday night.

Chief Gene Sealy updated the public Tuesday morning on the violent incident which took place on Linbrook Drive.

Around 11:45 p.m., Sealy says six people inside a home at that location heard a knock at the door. One of the victims went to the door to check who was there, and that's when three armed suspects barged into the home.

Sealy says the suspects demanded money from the victims, and pistol-whipped at least one of the victims.

As two of the suspects went to the back of the house, they were confronted at gunpoint by one of the victims inside the house. Sealy says one of the suspects and the victim got into a gunfight. The suspect was hit by gunfire, and died at the scene.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identifies the man killed as 23-year-old DeShawn T. Patterson.

The remaining two suspects then ran away.

None of the victims received any serious injury.

At this point, Sealy believes the incident is a random incident. He says there is an active search for the remaining suspects.
